“Corporate American. What's wrong with you people?”
Research for a new book

Your opinion matters.

I’m writing a new non-fiction book about corporate America.  This book will explore and reveal the real interworking of world of business, the politics, the policies and procedures, and the people.  This book will cover the good, bad, and sometimes humors side of the world of business.

I would love it if you contribute your thoughts on the subject. Click here

I’ve worked in the business world for over 20 plus years and hold two degrees; and I’ve come to two conclusions.  One, it doesn’t matter where you work there always seem to be the same types of people.  Two, what is taught in the classroom is nothing like what happens in the real world of business.

So, I’ve decided to write a book, which will include thoughts from the people who live it everyday.  In order to get a good cross section of ideas I want input from the janitor to the president, from waitress to general managers. Below are main topics I have come up with so far. Please let me know if there’s a topic that might be interesting to discuss.  Keep in mind this is not going to be a text book, but a closer look of what is really going on in the world of business from different perspectives.  Here’s a chance for you to say what you really think.  My hope is we all learn something and have a good laugh.

You can contribute you thoughts in three ways:

Do not give your full name or the name of the company in which you work.  The topics below are just a guide; please feel free to add any additional information.   Your opinion matters.

I know there are a lot of topics, so just pick one to comment on and come back often.

The interview and salary negotiations– What to wear how to act?  What is a good question?  What is the strangest question you’ve been asked?  Could you negotiate the salary that you really wanted?

Your job – Do you like your job?  What were your expectations of the job?  Did you take the job just because you needed to work or do you enjoy the work you are doing?

Your boss or supervisor – Do you like your supervisor or boss?  Why or Why not? What do you expect from your supervisor? What were your expectations of the job? What would you change about your job?

Upper Management or managers, directors, vice presidents etc. – Do you like your boss?  Do you think they make good business decisions?  Do you think people in upper management do not work?  Are there people you wish you could fire?

Direct reports or subordinates, worker bees - Do you like people that you supervise?  Why or why not?  If you have a boss do you like them? What are you expectation of your position?  What would you change about your job?  Are there people you wish you could fire?

Owner/President/CEO - Are you the sole decision maker or do you have a team of people you rely on to give you advise and keep you up-to-date on the day-to-day operations?  What do you think is the biggest misconception about your position?  Is your vision of the company being realized?

Gossip or the grapevine – Is it the most effective or just the quickest way to spread information.  Is it helpful or hurtful?

Business edict – the dress code, emails – Is it appropriate to wear flip flops, blue jeans, and tight or revealing clothes to corporate headquarter?  Are person calls okay as long as you get your work done?

Policies, Procedures, benefits – Do your company have too many policies and procedure?  Is the cost of you health care to much? Does your company offer benefits?  Do you get enough vacation or sick time? How flexible are your work hours. Can you telecommute?  Does your company have programs in place which will help in during a family emergency?

The company picnic, outings, parties, - Are these activities good or bad?  Do they promote team spirit or add additional pressure?  And why is there always someone who doesn’t know how to hold their liquor?

The performance review – Is the performance review a good way to evaluate an employee’s work.  Or should another method be used to determine an employee’s job performance?

Types of people in the work environment – for example there is always some who is always late and always have some sort of excuse.

Politics, climbing the corporate ladder – Do you have co-workers who does not do a very good job but always seem to get a head because they are always socializing?  Do you know someone who will not respond to you unless he or she can impress the boss?

Salary or Compensation – No one thinks they are paid enough, but what is really a fair wage?  Are CEOs and presidents paid too much?  What about athletes or actors?
